Mental Hygiene and You: A 4-Step Guide and Reflections in the Age of COVID-19

Mental Hygiene and You: A 4-Step Guide and Reflections in the Age of COVID-19

Articles
By Hasson Harris Wilcher Mental Health has been a dirty word for a long time. May has been deemed National Mental Health Month yet most Americans miss the key factors that play a part in mental health and demonize those who have it. Then the whole world had experienced a (hopefully) once-in-a-lifetime pandemic that turned most of us into shut-ins in a matter of weeks. How things change. I had written an article called “Run From Your Stress” about how exercise helps you manage stress, but not fully dove into the idea of Mental Health. I will correct that now and explore mental hygiene and my reflections since COVID-19.  Mental Health. What is it? Mental health is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as:  the condition of being sound mentally and…

The Butterfly Stage

The Butterfly Stage

Blog
I went into work this past week and noticed that the flower bush next to the main entrance had a number of butterflies around. I took a couple photos, in the hopes of posting it online later, like the good Millennial I am. I got close for the last one and the butterfly’s wings fluttered just enough to see the entirety of its wings. I showed a co-worker that photo later on in the day and we marveled at the beauty of the little bit of nature right around us. I then sent the photo to my family in the hopes to share what I had witnessed today and to brighten their moods. They liked it, and the signs that it might bring. I liked it too. Throughout the rest…

Life And Cigarettes

Life And Cigarettes

Poetry/ Stories
The cigarette was burning…as bright as the passion that we share, the passion of love and life. The burning desire to live is alive and well. The flame of love and life is still burning brightly. This initial spark of passion lit the cigarette and its stimulus was enticing. A high came from this cigarette being lit as you inhale the memories, the time together and the passion of life. A slow deep burn that lasts for seemingly forever but it turns out that it was finite. Over the years that flame slowly dies out until there is nothing left, no passion, no love. Not only the passion but that spark of life or life itself is gone. The high has faded leaving others wanting more but there is nothing…

Exercise does a mind and body good. Exercise is crucial for physical and mental health. Nothing takes you out of your pain and troubles like fighting for your life! Exercise is the practice of the fight or flight relax that all of us have. Building muscle and pumping iron is training your body to punch and kick harder. Building your endurance, and stamina is training your body to run faster and run longer. Everything we have done to this point in our lives was training for the moment when the fight or flight reflex kicks in. The truth is as much as we have grown into people who have free thought, "functioning societies," conquered sea, air, and land, and ultimately rose to the top of the food chain we are…

They Don’t Make Em Like They Used To

A look at consumerism and the price we pay. Why must things crack and break? With every advance in technology we seem to take a step back in longevity. Every time you get a new phone you better by a new case or you will have to loop right back into the store you bought it from. This seems ridiculous! Why do we have to continually buy new products when the ones we bought two years ago should be sufficient. I say it is a conspiracy and a clever company trick! They call it planned obsolescence. Planned obsolescence is an actual documented phenomenon as it is "a policy of producing consumer goods that rapidly become obsolete and so require replacing, achieved by frequent changes in design, termination of the supply…

How Language Saved My Life

How Language Saved My Life

Articles
The importance of languages and how it can help you in everyday life. We live in a world that is full of many different people, cultures, and languages. America is known as the "world's melting pot." It is where a variety of different people come together so that they can have a chance to prosper. Lets say you take any New York City square block. Any NYC block full of people you will find at least 3 different languages spoken by the people there. There are immigrants, foreign students, and working people who are bilingual, trilingual, or multilingual. Some may have been born into a non-English speaking family, some may be learning different languages for school, and others may have established careers where they had to pick up a language to make…

A Series of Fortunate Events

A Series of Fortunate Events

Articles
You gotta thank somebody or something for your existence.   How did we get here to this point today? How did I become this 21 year old man from a little baby? Well, you really don't want to know how that happened...but the short answer is by a series of fortunate events. The only thing that we really know in this world is that we exist. I know that for a fact because I have a brain, a heart, and soul. Some philosophers would also say that we all start off with a tabula rasa, or blank slate. I would disagree about that notion. Yes, we do start off as innocent children who then start learning things but part of who you are is determined by your family. By the people…
